Junior Stars Pre-Professional Troupe

What is the Junior Stars?

Comprehensive theatre education with an emphasis on musical theatre, ensemble work, and audition technique. The Junior Stars is open to grades 3-6.

While our year will focus on group training, there will also be some private instruction.

Some of the topics that may be covered throughout the year include:

  • Acting for the Stage
  • Acting for the Camera
  • Ensemble Singing
  • Vocal Health & Habits
  • Music Preparation
  • Script Analysis
  • Commercial/Film Technique
  • Stage Combat
  • Stage Makeup
  • Dance: Musical Theatre, Jazz, Tap,
  • Improv
  • Storytelling
  • Mock Audition workshops
  • Clowning/Physical Comedy

We may split our group for some training, specifically dance technique and music technique. Groups will be assigned based on level, age, or a combination of both.

Group classes will take place from 5:00-6:30 on Wednesdays beginning September 5.

Students will be assigned between 2-3 separate 30 minute private sessions in each semester which will focus on an area to address the students’ needs (dance, vocal, acting or audition prep). These private sessions are not to take the place of regular vocal training or dance training, but will enhance the work you are already doing and help to get you more intensively prepared for auditions and solo performances.

Private training will take place at agreed-upon times (before or after Junior Stars or at another time that teacher/student are available).

Our focus is on education and technique, and not on a large production. We have many opportunities in our area, including at DMR, to audition for performance opportunities. However, we do have two showcase performances planned throughout the year.

Our Junior Stars troupe is led by Director/Music Instructor, Nancy Paulson; Dance Instructor, Christine Thalwitz; and Acting Instructor/Audition Coach, Melissa Charles . We will also have a variety of Guest Teaching Artists throughout the year.

First Showcase

The first showcase will be with the Dream Team (our older pre-professional group) and will coincide with the 10th Anniversary Celebration of DMR Adventures.

The performances will be at 3PM and 7PM on Saturday, February 23, with rehearsals on Wednesday, Feb. 20 from 5PM-7PM and Friday, Feb. 22 from 5PM-8PM.

Second Showcase

The second showcase will only be for the Junior Stars.

The performances will be at 7PM on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27 with additional rehearsals on April 24 & 25 from 5:00-7:30PM.

We are instituting a strict policy on lateness (both to arrival and pick-up), preparedness, as well as conflicts. If there are recurring issues, we will have a meeting with parents(s) and student to discuss next steps.

Parent Classes/Meetings

We will have between 1-2 parent classes/meetings each semester. While these sessions are optional, we highly recommend attending, even if you have had training in the arts. We always learn new things from those in attendance, and this is a great opportunity for us to get to know you better.

Membership in DMR troupes does not affect casting decisions for DMR productions.

The total cost is $1050, which includes a 15% deposit, and multiple payment plan options. Junior Stars students receive 10% off all regular programs/classes held during the academic year (exception: private training). There is a 10% discount if this is paid in full on acceptance.
